Controlling The Controllable

Controlling The Controllable

Controlling the controllable sounds really nice on paper, eh? What exactly does that mean for someone who's looking to lead the life of their dreams? I'm assuming that caught your attention if you're still reading, so hang with me here for a minute. I am going to share with you a few of the obstacles I overcame and the things I've learned from the first 12 years of my entrepreneurial career so that on the off-chance you're experiencing similar challenges, you can navigate them with ease. Firstly, here are the challenges I first experienced as a solopreneur.

Three Challenges To Running Your Own Business: Support, Productivity, and Discipline

By and large the hardest thing for me as a solopreneur is keeping motivated to produce, stay on task and keep a narrow focus, week by week, day by day on business-generating activities. It is so easy to want to sit back and relax after you land a new account, client, or customer. I found many times that the chase was so draining that once I secured a new customer, I would treat that day as payday and take a whole week off of prospecting, merely because it was such a process and that little win felt like a huge milestone. This is a surefire way to run yourself out of business.

To compare entrepreneurship to working for an organization, complete with integral systems to hold employees accountable on revenue targets and productivity, a built-in support network of upper management, leadership and continuing education, as an entrepreneur I found that I had to outsource all of that myself. It was very difficult to maintain a pulse on generating new leads and facilitating projects and client progress at the same time. I found myself multiple times trying to work on the business and in the business at the same time, leading to frustration and burnout because I was unable to do either at the top of my game. The result? My session's value decreased and I was unable to recruit new business at a rate to sustain healthy growth. I damn near shut down my business many times!

What changed?

I started taking a look at other areas of my life that I was successful in to try to mirror those areas in my business and sought out mentorship to optimize the business.

I learned that was incredibly talented at keeping my health and wellness in check. We're talking superior specimen, next-level-Olympic-World-Champion-podium-finish kinda talented. What was I doing there that gave me the edge in that area of life?

I had a clearly defined vision and benchmark goals set all along the way.

I knew my training program, made the time in my schedule every day and checked in each week with a recap of how it went. Over time, this leads to compounding results. Exponential. Within 6 months I had crushed, and I mean crushed my targets.

I understood what had stopped me in the past.

I was aware that my lifestyle could be significantly improved. Up to that point, my nutrition had waivered, I was still drinking alcohol at the time and I had put myself in situations that'd jeopardize my sleep patterns. Balancing the dual career of artist-athlete, was a challenge in and of itself, as those two worlds collided hard when it came to rest and recovery. Or so I thought, anyway...

I re-wrote that narrative.

I was subscribed to "the rockstar lifestyle" because that's what was being pushed in the industry. So, I didn't wanna do that anymore. I chose to quit drinking, prioritize my sleep and training and voila... defined a new-age rockstar lifestyle. I even wrote the book on it and you can find it here at amazon.ca

I went back to the basics.

Basic attention on primal movements, sleep quality, water quality, whole food nutrition and that was just the surface stuff. Deepening meaningful relationships, spending time in nature, going for walks, meditating, - all of this was me creating peace points throughout the day to be able to generate enough power in my training sessions. Combine that with ample rest and recovery, and bingo. Target acquired.

I then empowered others to do the same.

The coach in me had to share my wins and secrets and everything as soon as I had figured it out, so I started sharing that immediately when I saw the results. Empowering others, typically through the form of teaching is a key part of progressive mastery and that was what sealed the deal for me in my fitness world that really allowed me to hone in on the skills to level up my health and wellness.

Then what, right?

Well, if we look at these 5 steps... they're transferrable to any part of your life.

1. First set out a vision

2. Become aware of what's stopped you in the past

3. Re-write the narrative and establish limiting beliefs..

4. ...By going back to basics with movement, nutrition and mindset.. (if you can move energy in your body you can do it in any part of your life...)

5. Empower others to do the same in their life

As such, we have my model of the mentorship program I called the Brave Method, a process to help individuals be brave and bear adversity navigating the challenges of life in pursuit of their life's purpose.

If you control the controllable, ie: your decisions, you can achieve new levels.
